Technical Application's Impact

Task One:

Provide a forecast of what the workforce demand would be over a five-year period to produce and market your team’s technical application or process. Include the impact such production would have on the marketplace.

The demand for the Peace-of-Mind Pacifier (POMP) over an initial five-year period would be large. Because 2,500 infants die of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome every year, it can be expected that many new parents would purchase this pacifier to protect their babies and prevent SIDS as much as possible. Marketing this product would not be incredibly difficult, because the target market is so specific that any advertisement could be very focused on new parents. However, initially it will be expensive to produce the POMP because the technology has to be developed, and making enough pacifiers to appease the demand will cause prices to rise.

1. M.S. in Nursing: Neonatal Nurse Practitioner

•       Description: This degree program is available to people with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) who are passionate about taking care of infants who are premature, have birth defects, or are at-risk. Many premature babies are victims of SIDS, so having this degree would help prevent SIDS and aid in the development of POMP’s technology.

2. Reproductive, Prenatal, and Pediatric Epidemiology

•       Description: While this program focuses on many aspects of babies and children, this program studies birth defects and premature babies, both of which have been traced to correlate with SIDS.

Task Three:

Develop an idea for a new science and/or engineering degree program that might emerge given the advancements in scientific knowledge that the team has identified. Provide a title and 100-word description of this new degree program.

Neonatal Complication Prevention Program:

This new medical science degree would arise from the preventative measures employed by Peace-of-Mind Pacifier. The cause of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, along with other birth complications, has been hypothesized about, so more preventative techniques can be employed to protect as many babies as possible. Students in this program would study the causes of complications such as SIDS, and ways to hinder it. When students with this knowledge become employed in hospitals, the knowledge of how to keep SIDS from happening will be available to new parents. This program, along with POMP, should be able to eradicate SIDS.
